Biodata
Dr. T.C.S.M.Gupta holds a Ph.D in Refining Chemistry (1992) from the Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun India and has over 27 years of experience in the areas of lubricants and additives – quality control and assurance, manufacturing, product development and technical support. Dr Gupta is currently working as senior vice president - quality, R&D and technical with Apar Industries Limited, Mumbai, India. Dr. Gupta has co-authored 35 papers, filed two Indian patents and published 6 technical reports.

His current research interests include lubricants and additives, nano fluids for lubricant applications, transformer oils and specialty oils. He has travelled to many countries and has worked in Malaysia for seven years with the last overseas assignment was as chief operating officer with LubeWorld Sdn Bhd., Malaysia. He is member of BIS committees on transformer oils and industrial lubricants, Cigre, Europe working groups, ALMU, Singapore and Quality Forum of India.

He has co-supervised Masters and Ph.D. students and is an approved co-supervisor/examiner at the University of Nottingham, Taylors University, Malaysia, Dharmsinh Desai University, Gurjrat and the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India. Dr. Gupta received merit scholarship as a senior research fellow and research associate from the Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun.

Brief Overview
Lubricants are formulated with mineral oils and synthetic base oils and variety of additives to manufacture the desired lubricant. Depending upon the application and tribological regimes large number of lubricants are being formulated which can be broadly classified into three categories automotive, industrial lubricants and specialty oils. The lubricants further can be classified into various types such as engine oils, gear/ transmission oils, metal working fluids (neat and water soluble/miscible type), metal treatment fluids, rust preventive oils and specialty oils such as transformer oils, heat treatment oils and process oils. Most of the automotive lubricants are formulated based on bench/rig tests with the validated additive packages and selected base oils for manufacturing the lubricants and read across guidelines for interchangeability of base oils. However, during the manufacture, variety of physico-chemical and performance tests conducted to ensure the safety, quality of the product at various stages of manufacturing before releasing to market. Identifying the critical to quality parameters depending upon the lubricant and to ensure the compatibility and miscibility of lubricants is the key to supply quality products
